Breitling are the world’s only major watch brand to submit all movements to the rigorous testing of COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), so you know you’re getting the very best quality when buying a Breitling watch. COSC testing starts with movements being individually wound according to a predetermined number once a day using a machine. The precision of the Breitling watch is then measured by a robot that reads the position of the second hand. Each individually numbered movement of the Breitling watch is then tested during 15 consecutive days and nights, and controls are performed in five positions and at three different temperatures.

  • How often does my Breitling watch need to be serviced?

Breitling recommends a maintenance service on your watch every 2 years. This includes checking the movement parameters and functions on your Breitling watch, changing all seals, checking water resistance, cleaning the case and metal bracelet and changing the battery for quartz watches, to make sure your Breitling watch is in perfect working order.

Every 4 to 6 years, Breitling recommends a complete service which includes: disassembly, cleaning and replacing of standard movement parts, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and setting of movement function parameters; changing all seals, partial changing of hands and checking of water resistance; refurbishment of the case and metal bracelet; changing the battery for quartz watches. You can also have your Breitling strap/bracelet changed in store.

  • How do I clean my Breitling?

Keep your Breitling watch clean and working smoothly by regular cleaning. Breitling recommend cleaning the strap often using a toothbrush and liquid soap. Rinse the strap and the case of your Breitling watch under a gentle stream of water and dry with an absorbent cloth. For Breitling watches with a leather strap, clean the case with a humid cloth. If the leather is splashed, absorb the liquid as fast as possible with a cloth. This method should ensure that your Breitling watch is back to sparkling like new in no time. It will also help with watch performance and durability. Discover our Watch Care Guide for more information and advice on how to care for your watch.

  • Are Breitling watches a good investment?

As Breitling is a highly regarded luxury Swiss watch brand, it goes without saying that buying a Breitling watch is a good investment, and that Breitling watches generally appreciate in value. Breitling’s reputation is one of exceptional craftsmanship and performance, and Breitling’s recognition in the watch world means that Breitling watches will remain high value. Breitling watches also come with a warranty, so you’re secured for two years after purchasing your watch.

  • Do Breitling watches hold their value?

Breitling watches are an investment piece. The durability of a Breitling watch and its timeless design ensure that the timepiece’s legacy and value are upheld for the future, too. Breitling watches are made to be passed on to future generations and be outstanding timekeeping tools for a lifetime and beyond.

  • Are Breitling watches waterproof?

Can I wear my Breitling watch in the shower? Or can I swim in my Breitling watch? This all depends on the water resistance of your model. The water resistance of a Breitling watch is measured in metres or bars, and alludes to how much water pressure your watch can endure at the said depth. However, to maintain your Breitling watch’s water resistance, Breitling recommend that you regularly get your watch maintenance serviced every two years, and undergo a water resistance test every year. If you have any doubts about the water resistance of your watch, it’s best to avoid water until you’re sure your watch is suitable. If you are unsure about the water resistance of your Breitling watch, you can pop into your nearest Beaverbrooks store or speak to a member of our customer service team for assistance and advice.

  • Does a Breitling watch have a battery?

Quartz watches are operated by a battery movement. The movement of a quartz watch is powered by the battery, which is driven and regulated by a quartz crystal and an electronic oscillator. Are Breitling watches battery operated? Some Breitling watches possess a quartz movement, some an automatic mechanical movement, and others a manual mechanical movement. The current Breitling quartz models have a thermocompensated SUPERQUARTZ TM movement, which ensures a highly precise movement of +/- 15 seconds a year. Meaning that your battery operated Breitling watch will be accurate within +/- 15 seconds even after the duration of a year.

  • Are all Breitling watches automatic?

Breitling offer watches with a range of movements. Many Breitling watches are mechanical, which means they feature a mechanical movement and winding feature. An automatic Breitling watch is made up of a self-winding mechanical movement, meaning that it will self-wind due to the wearer’s general wrist movement. However, if there isn’t enough movement, the power reserve will begin to drain and cause the watch to stop. If this happens, you can wind your Breitling watch by the crown.

On the contrary, if your Breitling watch is manual, it needs to be wound by the crown daily. Many Breitling watches are automatic, this will be stated on the description of the watch. Winding is complete when you feel the crown resisting. Be careful not to overwind as this will damage the mechanism.

  • Do Breitling watches tick?

Your Breitling watch will tick if it is operated by a quartz movement. If your Breitling watch is a mechanical or automatic watch, the second hand should glide fluidly around the dial. A watch’s ticking noise is made by a quartz, battery operated movement, in which the second hand jumps from second to second around the dial. The second hand on a mechanical Breitling watch should move in a steady motion, and not stutter or tick.

  • What's the difference between a quartz watch and a mechanical watch?

Breitling manufacture watches with both quartz and mechanical movements. Quartz watches are powered by a battery whereas mechanical watches are hand-wound, powered by gears and springs. The battery in a Breitling quartz watch is driven and regulated by a quartz crystal and an electronic oscillator. A Breitling mechanical watch, however, needs to be wound by its crown (if manual), or by the energy provided by the user’s movements (if automatic). These movements wind the mainspring, which then powers the mechanical chronometer movement. This means that some Breitling watches have a quartz movement and are battery operated, but other Breitling watches that are mechanical need winding to function.

  • What's the difference between a chromometer and a chronograph?

A chronograph watch has a stopwatch function and relates to the function of the watch. Whereas a chronometer watch is a high-precision timepiece that has been certified by COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), and relates to the watch’s mechanical movement. A Breitling chronograph will have a stopwatch, and also sub-dials upon the dial of the timepiece that can measure the duration of an event. A chronometer regards the level of performance of a timepiece. Your mechanical Breitling watch will feature a chronometer status, which is achieved after rigorous COSC testing, to make sure the watch is extremely precise in its timekeeping. Breitling are the inventors of the chronograph watch, and some Breitling watches also have a chronometer function.

  • Are Breitling watches handmade?

Many elements of Breitling watches are handmade by expert watchmakers, but Breitling also use high-tech machinery and robots during manufacture of their watches. For the assembly of more intricate and smaller movements and parts, the use of watchmaking machines is incorporated. Breitling watches are also COSC certified, so robots are used during the testing stages of the watchmaking, to accurately measure precise movements. Breitling watches are manufactured entirely in-house, and having handmade elements, the price point of Breitling watches is relatively higher because of this.

  • Do Breitling watches contain lab-grown diamonds?

The new Breitling Super Chronomat Origins is the brand’s first watch to feature lab-grown diamonds on the bezel. So yes, some Breitling watches do contain lab-grown diamonds. What are lab-grown diamonds and are they real? Gemmologists consider lab grown diamonds to be genuine diamonds because they have the exact same physical and chemical composition as mined diamonds. The difference between lab-grown diamonds and real diamonds is their origin and time taken to grow; real, earth-grown diamonds take millions of years to form under the earth’s crust, whilst lab-grown diamonds are formed in up to ten weeks. At Beaverbrooks, we believe natural diamonds are one of the most precious gemstones, that symbolise love and eternity, and that nothing compare to the rarity of a natural diamond.
